Mother’s Day Craft Jewellery Box by Noah & Finley

Ok , so we were thinking of Mother’s Day craft ideas and thought the boys would make a personalised craft jewellery box for Mummy. Noah is 7 and Finley is 5 so they enjoyed this.

We started with a quality plain wooden box like this one

We had some Wilko Satin Paint that does not require an undercoat. This was lucky for two reasons, 1. No waiting for a paint layer to dry and 2. It was quicker for the boys as they wanted to get decorating and this was the boring bit. You might want to do the base coat yourself and then let your child/ren get involved later..?

Be careful when they paint not to get any lumpy areas and apply thin coats of paint-that way it dries quicker too

As you can see below if you put the pain on too thickly you end up with drips all around the edges TOP TIP-remember to look inside the box too (even if you are not painting in there you may have some drips that have seeped inside)

Again, drips. Check all around your Mother’s Day Craft Jewellery box edges before you leave it to dry!

You might be skillful and be able to pain all the outside and then the inside, but remember not to  paint it and then shut the lid! it will stick like glue together! You could add some offcuts of material to the inside if you want to add that touch of luxury. We chose to have a plain inside and add some embellishment later…..

To personalise it even more we used our home printer to print out some pictures of Noah and Finley with Mummy and then added them to these great printed frames from The Works high street shop (super cheap for craft materials-which can always be doubled up for homework projects if you have any left over)

We had to set the printer settings to reduce them a bit in size but they came out very well. We then used glue dots (perfect and quick for when crafting) to stick them to the box. You could use a hot glue gun if you have one, or pva.

The boys made sure they lined the pictures up well with the edges as mummy would keep trying to make them line up…

We then used some ribbon we managed to get 3 for £1 in Clintons. Bargain

We used the glue dots on the first one but they were a bit bumpy so on the second one we used a pritt stick.

Pritt stick was less bumpy

The boys again lined up the ribbon several times!

To further add to the lid they then used some left over acrylic paint we had to paint the wooden craft hearts different shades

Unfortunately for Mummy the boys were getting bored and the painted wooden hearts went on a bit more random

We decided to add a bit of design inside so as not to be too bare. We might not have done this if we were putting a lining in the box but felt this worked

We used the glue dots to stick the decoration inside, and then when the box is opened the hang really nicely and then fold flat on the open lid
